The EDHEC - WSJE Leadership Gallery
A unique journey with business leaders
Learning to lead! This was the challenge EDHEC set itself in 2003 with the launching of the Leadership and Managerial Competencies' Chair. Close collaboration between professors, researchers and business professionals has contributed to converting this challenge into reality. The EDHEC Leadership Gallery, the first project to be initiated by the Chair, is an example of this commitment by the School and its graduates to an essential goal: the development of leadership and the training of future top managers.
Every year, the EDHEC Leadership Gallery produces portraits of top European managers on the theme of leadership. Each one presents the career of a business leader, analyses his/her style of leadership, details his/her views but above all presents those experiences and situations where the manager developed his/her leadership.
The Gallery thus offers a unique and qualitative collection of personal accounts of strategic leadership. The portraits are produced after an interview conducted by a professor and a student from EDHEC Business School. It was a deliberate choice to include students in the research for the project which was designed around interviews with business leaders mainly carried out by the students themselves. This was a special learning experience for them. They had the occasion to confront and apply the methods needed in conducting research and to benefit from the experience of top managers who offered them a personal insight into how they had learned to lead. The quality and frankness of the exchange between the coming generation of managers and their elders was a major highlight of the project.
Once completed, the portraits are hung in the corridors of EDHEC's campuses. They allow viewers, whether students or business leaders, to discover the diversity of views and practices connected to leadership. The Gallery was inaugurated in June 2005 in Lille and in April 2007 in Nice. The Gallery has two patrons: Claude Bébéar (Former Chairman of AXA Group) and Laurent Lapierre (HEC Montreal, Chair Holder, Pierre-Péladeau Leadership Chair).
In September 2008 EDHEC approached The Wall Street Journal Europe Future Leadership Institute to co-organize the list of CEO's to be featured in the EDHEC-WSJE Leadership Gallery.
