Monday, 15 March 2010 | University News

The University of Buckingham will be hosting a debate between Nigel Farage, politician and former leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) and James Elles, Conservative MEP for the South-East region on Tuesday the 16th March.  The debate is entitled: "Global Challenges: How do we handle them?"

James Elles graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a BSc in agriculture. He served as the MEP for Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire from 1984 to 1989 and was the MEP for Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire East from 1994 to 1999.

He has represented the South East in the European Parliament since 1999 and has special responsibility for the Conservative Party for the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

Nigel Farage was educated at Dulwich College before joining a commodity brokerage firm in London.

He became a founding member of UKIP in 1993 and was elected to the European Parliament in 1999.  On 12 September 2006, Nigel Farage was elected leader of UKIP.

In September 2009, it was announced he would resign as leader of UKIP and would stand against John Bercow, the newly elected Speaker of the House of Commons, in his Buckingham constituency at the 2010 general election, despite a convention that the Speaker is outside party politics and not challenged for re-election.
