Wind Turbine Plan for Port of Antwerp Left Bank

Thursday, 11 March 2010 | Leadership in Sustainability

Antwerp Port Authority and the Left Bank Corporation hope to built a large wind farm in the port area on the left bank of the Scheldt in collaboration with private partners. The Flemish Wind Energy Association (VWEA) and the Flemish minister of energy Freya Van den Bossche recently chose the Antwerp seaport area as an excellent location for setting up large-scale wind turbines.

Antwerp Port Authority and the Left Bank Corporation last week signed a collaboration agreement for drawing up an area coverage wind turbine plan for the left bank. The two parties have not waited for the findings of the VWEA and the Flemish government to get their collaboration going. However, their conclusions do confirm the ambitions of the Port Authority and the Left Bank Corporation to make maximum use of the possibilities for developing renewable energy within the port area. The initiative for a wind plan has been taken on the right bank also.

The Port Authority and the Left Bank Corporation aim to make the maximum, most efficient use of wind turbines, in agreement with port users. All the relevant factors that could influence the development will be investigated in consultation with the operators concerned, and the first results will be announced in June. These will then be discussed with the port users and other stakeholders.
